What do you see with you look at this photo?
A badly taken picture snapped with incorrect lighting perhaps?
A horse turning his head away, seemingly camera shy?
I see something altogether different.
I see the mystery of life itself, a thinning of the veil, spirit in form and form in spirit. Emptiness and form dancing.
As this beautiful being sheds his past, a new name for him is dawning, but hasn’t quite yet arrived, like the gentle pause just before sunrise.
This being refuses to be put into a box (metaphorically) which is precisely why I love him and precisely why he would be a ‘problem’ horse for a lot of people. He straddles dimensions and seems to move through life in-between worlds. I have never met another horse quiet like him.
The thing is most people love boxes; they put other’s and themselves in them constantly, without realising it. In some attempt to feel safer, more secure, a type of knowing who is who, and where everything ‘should’ be.
You are in this role, and I am in that role.
This often leads to unconsciously elevating some people above themselves and above others and dismissing, minimising or ignoring those they deem beneath them or who they would like to see beneath them. All driven by unconscious fear.
A homeless person on the street may offer you more insight and wisdom in a channelled message than someone who wants to be on a pedestal as a ‘guru’ in any sphere of life. The ‘guru’ wanting elevation is also driven by fear.
The old paradigm of egoic consciousness lets fear create a false hierarchy, where dominance and submission, to varying degrees, are the only way the game can be played.
It may be obvious in certain arenas like politics or corporate boardrooms. Maybe it is easy to point to it in traditional equestrian pursuits. But it is in its most insidious form in spiritual circles, eco/ earth loving groups, freedom groups, as well as in the ‘natural’ ‘free’ and ‘liberty’ horse world.
I say insidious because as a shadow element it goes more underground, becomes more entrenched, because the surface must look a certain way to fit into a ‘box’ of this or that. Spiritual and holy, only of the light or natural and free or horse-centric, a spiritual path with horses.
With this extreme going underground of the shadow, the most blatant forms of narcissistic teachers, leaders, instructors and trainers can thrive, and it seems the ‘group’ can be looking it in the face and not see it.
Our deepest divine essence, our soul evolution and the authentic enlightenment drive asks us to shed these false ideas and fears and to step beyond any need to ‘belong’ to a group.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t form groups or gather in groups, these can be wonderful things and are good for us in so many ways.
What I am saying is true spiritual awakening will ask you to step beyond all boxes and at a certain point that will call for the leap to be done alone. That is where true freedom lies.
Because whilst belonging on a human level is wonderful, if you fall into unconsciousness or stay stuck in unconscious patterns, it can also put you in a box.
That box only temporarily soothes the fear under the surface. The infinite can never be put in a box, and we will face that existential fear sooner or later. Facing it sooner frees you up to live life from the pure joy of being as that divine vastness has no landing place with identity.
How would we show up moment to moment in life and as the case may be with our horses if it was the will of that vastness that moved us instead of living in a self-created box? Or worst yet a box that other people’s projections created for us and we believed?
From that place we can form groups, lead groups or join groups and never be boxed in.
